Farewell updates for Wes and Larry and Transition Committee

As we begin the 50 days of Easter, we are also starting a period of celebration of the many gifts that both Rev. Wes Smedley and Deacon Larry Green have brought to our church community.

To ensure the best planning for these celebrations as well as additional changes ahead, the Vestry has formed a Transition Committee that is charged with three primary responsibilities:

  1. Ensuring Wes and his family are celebrated and sent off well
  2. Welcoming the Interim Rector this summer
  3. Preparing for and Welcoming our New Rector

The members of Vestry who are serving as part of the Transition Committee are: Sarah Helfers, Wende Fox Lawson, Robert Rodman, Priscilla Whittier and Angie Yorath. This group will certainly want help from other parishioners to plan events to celebrate Wes and Larry, so please reach out to the Committee through the shared email (transition@saintc.org) if you have ideas or wish to contribute.

As is customary in the Episcopal Church, we want to show our appreciate for Wes and his family by also sending them off with a purse. The Smedley family will need to find new housing in Chicago after nearly nine years living in the rectory. If you feel inclined to contribute to the purse for the Smedleys, please use the following link: https://onrealm.org/SaintC/give/wespurse, or you can send a check to the church office with “Purse for Wes” in the memo line. We will present the purse to Wes on Sunday, June 26.

We are also going to celebrate Deacon Larry Green’s many years of service to our church on Sunday, May 22. If you would like to send a token of appreciation for Larry, please send a check to the church office with “Thank You Gift for Larry” in the memo line or please use the following link: https://onrealm.org/SaintC/give/larrygift.

As we celebrate Wes and Larry, we also look forward to celebrating Rev. Will Bouvel’s ordination to the priesthood on June 25 at St. James Cathedral. More information on his ordination service will follow at a later date.

This is a time of change and hope for our church, and we are grateful for your support as well as your patience. Please reach out to us with any questions or ideas in the coming weeks. We plan to communicate each step of this process in a straight–forward, timely manner and we look forward to planning for the future of St. Chrysostom’s together.

In gratitude,

John Bankhurst, Senior Warden

Ginny Van Alyea, Junior Warden
